"Thou Shalt Have No Other Gods Before Me."
Yahweh seems to spend most of his time telling the Israelites
not to worship other gods as seen below. You would think an omipotent
god would be more effective in convincing people of his supremacy.
But the Israelites continue to follow other
gods throughout the Old Testament.
Exodus 20
3 "You shall have no other gods before me.
Exodus 20
23 Do not make any gods to be alongside me; do not make for yourselves
gods of silver or gods of gold.
Exodus 23
13 "Be careful to do everything I have said to you. Do not
invoke the names of other gods; do not let them be heard on your
lips.
Exodus 23
24 Do not bow down before their gods or worship them or follow
their practices. You must demolish them and break their sacred
stones to pieces.
Exodus 23
32 Do not make a covenant with them or with their gods.
33 Do not let them live in your land, or they will cause you to
sin against me, because the worship of their gods will certainly
be a snare to you."
Exodus 34
15 "Be careful not to make a treaty with those who live in
the land; for when they prostitute themselves to their gods and
sacrifice to them, they will invite you and you will eat their
sacrifices.
Leviticus 19
4 " 'Do not turn to idols or make gods of cast metal for
yourselves. I am the Lord your God.
Deuteronomy 6
14 Do not follow other gods, the gods of the peoples around you;
Deuteronomy 7
4 for they will turn your sons away from following me to serve
other gods, and the Lord's anger will burn against you and will
quickly destroy you.
Deuteronomy 7
16 You must destroy all the peoples the Lord your God gives over
to you. Do not look on them with pity and do not serve their gods,
for that will be a snare to you.
Deuteronomy 7
25 The images of their gods you are to burn in the fire. Do not
covet the silver and gold on them, and do not take it for yourselves,
or you will be ensnared by it, for it is detestable to the Lord
your God.
Deuteronomy 8
19 If you ever forget the Lord your God and follow other gods
and worship and bow down to them, I testify against you today
that you will surely be destroyed.
Deuteronomy 11
16 Be careful, or you will be enticed to turn away and worship
other gods and bow down to them.
Deuteronomy 11
28 the curse if you disobey the commands of the Lord your God
and turn from the way that I command you today by following other
gods, which you have not known.
Deuteronomy 12
2 Destroy completely all the places on the high mountains and
on the hills and under every spreading tree where the nations
you are dispossessing worship their gods.
Deuteronomy 12
3 Break down their altars, smash their sacred stones and burn
their Asherah poles in the fire; cut down the idols of their gods
and wipe out their names from those places.
Deuteronomy 12
30 and after they have been destroyed before you, be careful not
to be ensnared by inquiring about their gods, saying, "How
do these nations serve their gods? We will do the same."
Deuteronomy 12
31 You must not worship the Lord your God in their way, because
in worshiping their gods, they do all kinds of detestable things
the Lord hates. They even burn their sons and daughters in the
fire as sacrifices to their gods.
Deuteronomy 13
1 If a prophet, or one who foretells by dreams, appears among
you and announces to you a miraculous sign or wonder,
2 and if the sign or wonder of which he has spoken takes place,
and he says, "Let us follow other gods" (gods you have
not known) "and let us worship them,"
3 you must not listen to the words of that prophet or dreamer.
The LORD your God is testing you to find out whether you love
him with all your heart and with all your soul.
4 It is the LORD your God you must follow, and him you must revere.
Keep his commands and obey him; serve him and hold fast to him.
5 That prophet or dreamer must be put to death, because he preached
rebellion against the LORD your God, who brought you out of Egypt
and redeemed you from the land of slavery; he has tried to turn
you from the way the LORD your God commanded you to follow. You
must purge the evil from among you.
Deuteronomy 13
12 If you hear it said about one of the towns the Lord your God
is giving you to live in
13 that wicked men have arisen among you and have led the people
of their town astray, saying, "Let us go and worship other
gods" (gods you have not known),
14 then you must inquire, probe and investigate it thoroughly.
And if it is true and it has been proved that this detestable
thing has been done among you,
Deuteronomy 16
21 Do not set up any wooden Asherah pole beside the altar you
build to the Lord your God,
Deuteronomy 17
1 Do not sacrifice to the Lord your God an ox or a sheep that
has any defect or flaw in it, for that would be detestable to
him.
2 If a man or woman living among you in one of the towns the Lord
gives you is found doing evil in the eyes of the Lord your God
in violation of his covenant,
3 and contrary to my command has worshiped other gods, bowing
down to them or to the sun or the moon or the stars of the sky,
4 and this has been brought to your attention, then you must investigate
it thoroughly. If it is true and it has been proved that this
detestable thing has been done in Israel,
5 take the man or woman who has done this evil deed to your city
gate and stone that person to death.
6 On the testimony of two or three witnesses a man shall be put
to death, but no one shall be put to death on the testimony of
only one witness.
7 The hands of the witnesses must be the first in putting him
to death, and then the hands of all the people. You must purge
the evil from among you.
Deuteronomy 18
20 But a prophet who presumes to speak in my name anything I have
not commanded him to say, or a prophet who speaks in the name
of other gods, must be put to death."

36 The Lord will drive you and the king you set over you to a
nation unknown to you or your fathers. There you will worship
other gods, gods of wood and stone.
Deuteronomy 28
64 Then the Lord will scatter you among all nations, from one
end of the earth to the other. There you will worship other gods-gods
of wood and stone, which neither you nor your fathers have known.
Deuteronomy 29
18 Make sure there is no man or woman, clan or tribe among you
today whose heart turns away from the Lord our God to go and worship
the gods of those nations; make sure there is no root among you
that produces such bitter poison.
Deuteronomy 30
16 For I command you today to love the Lord your God, to walk
in his ways, and to keep his commands, decrees and laws; then
you will live and increase, and the Lord your God will bless you
in the land you are entering to possess.
17 But if your heart turns away and you are not obedient, and
if you are drawn away to bow down to other gods and worship them,
18 I declare to you this day that you will certainly be destroyed.
You will not live long in the land you are crossing the Jordan
to enter and possess.
Deuteronomy 32
15 Jeshurun grew fat and kicked;
filled with food, he became heavy and sleek.
He abandoned the God who made him
and rejected the Rock his Savior.
16 They made him jealous with their foreign gods
and angered him with their detestable idols.
17 They sacrificed to demons, which are not God-
gods they had not known,
gods that recently appeared,
gods your fathers did not fear.
(Jeshurun means the upright one, that is, Israel.)

3 And Samuel said to the whole house of Israel, "If you are
returning to the Lord with all your hearts, then rid yourselves
of the foreign gods and the Ashtoreths and commit yourselves to
the Lord and serve him only, and he will deliver you out of the
hand of the Philistines."

5 I will establish your royal throne over Israel forever, as I

to have a man on the throne of Israel.'
6 "But if you or your sons turn away from me and do not observe
the commands and decrees I have given you and go off to serve
other gods and worship them,
7 then I will cut off Israel from the land I have given them and
will reject this temple I have consecrated for my Name. Israel
will then become a byword and an object of ridicule among all
peoples.

worship other gods.

I have given you and go off to serve other gods and worship them,
20 then I will uproot Israel from my land, which I have given

I will make it a byword and an object of ridicule among all peoples.
