Questions for Believers
Just a few questions for believers.
Why have faith?
- Why is it that faith is only required for God, faith healers and psychics?
- Faith is not required to know gravity, or electricity, or the wind.
Why God?
- If faith is a valid way to determine what is true, why not use it everywhere? Should doctors use faith to diagnose disease? Or to determine
which treatment to use? Should juries use faith to determine guilt or
innocence?
The Nature of God
An omniscient God
An omniscient God would know everything that has happened and everything
that will happen. His knowledge could not be wrong. There is not a single
event that He has not foresaw.
An omnipotent God
vs. disease
Can God make a spherical cube?
Can God create a rock so big he can't lift it?
An omnibenevolent God
How can an omnibenevolent God allow suffering?
A perfect God
If God is perfect how can he create defective beings? Yet we allegedly
are defective. We had to be drowned by flood (Noah's Ark), destroyed
at Sodom and Gomorrah, and burned for eternity in Hell.
Who created God?
Believers often argue that "something can't come from nothing" in
their defense of creationism. According to this argument, if comes
into existence it must have a cause.
(This is not necessarly accurate. It may indeed be possible for something
to come from nothing. Quantum processes, for instance, are thought
to originate without a cause - something from nothing. We simply cannot
state with certainty that something can't come from nothing)
However, if we continue with the argument that something can't come
from nothing, where did God come from? If beings require a creator,
who created God?
Souls
- Where is the soul located in the body?
- If your soul is throughout your body, and you have part of your body amputated, is part of your soul amputated too?
- Many believers claim that things (Jesus, their soul, etc.) are stored in their heart. If you have a heart transplant do you lose them?
The Afterlife
- How will you know you are in heaven if your brain is dead? Where will you store that information?
- How will you know where you are without eyes to see or ears to hear?
- Souls have no pain receptors, nor heat or cold receptors. Wow will they suffer in Hell?
Who's in Heaven?
Gandhi
Some believe that only people who accept their religion will be going to heaven. If God is Christian, Jewish or Muslim, what about Gandhi? A man who lived his life in peace, who fought and died for the freedom of his people is going to hell. But Joe Schmoe next door is going to heaven because he attends the right church?
Hitler
If Hitler asked the Christian god for forgiveness before dying is he
sitting in heaven right now? (Hitler was not an atheist. Please see
Hitler for a detailed discussion
of his religious views.)
Anne Frank
A brave young woman who helped hide other Jews during the holocaust. Is she also doomed to hell for not following the right god?
