Baal

11 Then the Israelites did evil in the eyes of the Lord and served
the Baals.
Judges 2
13 because they forsook him and served Baal and the Ashtoreths.
Judges 3
7 The Israelites did evil in the eyes of the Lord; they forgot
the Lord their God and served the Baals and the Asherahs.
Judges 6
25 That same night the Lord said to him, "Take the second
bull from your father's herd, the one seven years old. Tear down
your father's altar to Baal and cut down the Asherah pole beside
it.
28 In the morning when the men of the town got up, there was Baal's
altar, demolished, with the Asherah pole beside it cut down and
the second bull sacrificed on the newly built altar!
30 The men of the town demanded of Joash, "Bring out your
son. He must die, because he has broken down Baal's altar and
cut down the Asherah pole beside it."
31 But Joash replied to the hostile crowd around him, "Are
you going to plead Baal's cause? Are you trying to save him? Whoever
fights for him shall be put to death by morning! If Baal really
is a god, he can defend himself when someone breaks down his altar."
32 So that day they called Gideon "Jerub-Baal," saying,
"Let Baal contend with him," because he broke down Baal's
altar.
Judges 8
32 Gideon son of Joash died at a good old age and was buried in
the tomb of his father Joash in Ophrah of the Abiezrites.
33 No sooner had Gideon died than the Israelites again prostituted
themselves to the Baals. They set up Baal-Berith as their god
and 34 did not remember the Lord their God, who had rescued them
from the hands of all their enemies on every side.
Judges 10
6 Again the Israelites did evil in the eyes of the Lord. They
served the Baals and the Ashtoreths, and the gods of Aram, the
gods of Sidon, the gods of Moab, the gods of the Ammonites and
the gods of the Philistines. And because the Israelites forsook
the Lord and no longer served him,
Judges 10
10 Then the Israelites cried out to the Lord, "We have sinned
against you, forsaking our God and serving the Baals."
1 Samuel 7
4 So the Israelites put away their Baals and Ashtoreths, and served
the Lord only.
1 Samuel 12
10 They cried out to the Lord and said, 'We have sinned; we have
forsaken the Lord and served the Baals and the Ashtoreths. But
now deliver us from the hands of our enemies, and we will serve
you.'
1 Kings 16
30 Ahab son of Omri did more evil in the eyes of the Lord than
any of those before him.
31 He not only considered it trivial to commit the sins of Jeroboam
son of Nebat, but he also married Jezebel daughter of Ethbaal
king of the Sidonians, and began to serve Baal and worship him.
32 He set up an altar for Baal in the temple of Baal that he built
in Samaria.
1 Kings 18
18 "I have not made trouble for Israel," Elijah replied.
"But you and your father's family have. You have abandoned
the Lord's commands and have followed the Baals.
19 Now summon the people from all over Israel to meet me on Mount
Carmel. And bring the four hundred and fifty prophets of Baal
and the four hundred prophets of Asherah, who eat at Jezebel's
table."
1 Kings 22
53 He served and worshiped Baal and provoked the Lord, the God

father had made.
2 Kings 10
18 Then Jehu brought all the people together and said to them,
"Ahab served Baal a little; Jehu will serve him much.
19 Now summon all the prophets of Baal, all his ministers and
all his priests. See that no one is missing, because I am going
to hold a great sacrifice for Baal. Anyone who fails to come will
no longer live." But Jehu was acting deceptively in order
to destroy the ministers of Baal.
20 Jehu said, "Call an assembly in honor of Baal." So
they proclaimed it.
21 Then he sent word throughout Israel, and all the ministers
of Baal came; not one stayed away. They crowded into the temple
of Baal until it was full from one end to the other.
22 And Jehu said to the keeper of the wardrobe, "Bring robes
for all the ministers of Baal." So he brought out robes for
them.
23 Then Jehu and Jehonadab son of Recab went into the temple of
Baal. Jehu said to the ministers of Baal, "Look around and
see that no servants of the Lord are here with you-only ministers
of Baal."
24 So they went in to make sacrifices and burnt offerings. Now
Jehu had posted eighty men outside with this warning: "If
one of you lets any of the men I am placing in your hands escape,
it will be your life for his life."
25 As soon as Jehu had finished making the burnt offering, he
ordered the guards and officers: "Go in and kill them; let
no one escape." So they cut them down with the sword. The
guards and officers threw the bodies out and then entered the
inner shrine of the temple of Baal.
26 They brought the sacred stone out of the temple of Baal and
burned it.
27 They demolished the sacred stone of Baal and tore down the
temple of Baal, and people have used it for a latrine to this

2 Kings 23
4 The king ordered Hilkiah the high priest, the priests next in

Valley and took the ashes to Bethel.
2 Kings 23
5 He did away with the pagan priests appointed by the kings of

sacrificed to them.

your father's altar to Baal and cut down the Asherah pole beside

"Let Baal contend with him," because he broke down Baal's
altar.
1 Kings 14
15 And the Lord will strike Israel, so that it will be like a
reed swaying in the water. He will uproot Israel from this good
land that he gave to their forefathers and scatter them beyond

and Asherah poles on every high hill and under every spreading

of all the tribes of Israel, I will put my Name forever.
2 Kings 23
4 The king ordered Hilkiah the high priest, the priests next in

hosts. He burned them outside Jerusalem in the fields of the Kidron
Valley and took the ashes to Bethel.

Kidron Valley outside Jerusalem and burned it there. He ground
it to powder and scattered the dust over the graves of the common
people.
7 He also tore down the quarters of the male shrine prostitutes,
which were in the temple of the Lord and where women did weaving
for Asherah.
14 Josiah smashed the sacred stones and cut down the Asherah
poles and covered the sites with human bones.

himself-all are written in the records of the seers.
2 Chronicles 34
3 In the eighth year of his reign, while he was still young, he
began to seek the God of his father David. In his twelfth year

poles, carved idols and cast images.
4 Under his direction the altars of the Baals were torn down;

will be left standing.

us in the name of the Lord!
17 We will certainly do everything we said we would: We will burn
incense to the Queen of Heaven and will pour out drink offerings
to her just as we and our fathers, our kings and our officials
did in the towns of Judah and in the streets of Jerusalem. At
that time we had plenty of food and were well off and suffered
no harm.
18 But ever since we stopped burning incense to the Queen of Heaven
and pouring out drink offerings to her, we have had nothing and
have been perishing by sword and famine."
19 The women added, "When we burned incense to the Queen
of Heaven and poured out drink offerings to her, did not our husbands
know that we were making cakes like her image and pouring out
drink offerings to her?"
25 This is what the Lord Almighty, the God of Israel, says: You
and your wives have shown by your actions what you promised when
you said, 'We will certainly carry out the vows we made to burn
incense and pour out drink offerings to the Queen of Heaven.'
"Go ahead then, do what you promised! Keep your vows!

Gods

24 Furthermore, Josiah got rid of the mediums and spiritists,
the household gods, the idols and all the other detestable things
seen in Judah and Jerusalem. This he did to fulfill the requirements
of the law written in the book that Hilkiah the priest had discovered
in the temple of the Lord.
