Introduction to the Question of God

The Riddle of Epicurus
Is God willing to prevent evil, but not able? Then he is not omnipotent.
Is he able, but not willing? Then he is malevolent.
Is he both able and willing? Then whence cometh evil?
Is he neither able nor willing? Then why call him God?

Many people assume that the existence of God is a closed matter. It seems perfectly obvious to them that there is a god and they question the matter no further. For them God answers questions. He defines the purpose of life. He answers difficult questions. Why do bad things happen to good people? Why is there disease and suffering? What happens when we die?

For others the claim that a god exists creates dilemmas rather than offering answers. The idea of an omnipotent, omniscient, omnipresent, omnibenevolent, transcendental, creator god defies logic. It is those dilemmas that will be addressed here.
