The "Sacrifice" of Jesus

The issue arises concerning what was actually sacrificed by Jesus. If one claims that Jesus' body was "resurrected" then what was sacrificed? Not his life. Not if he got back up. And Christians tell me he is still alive. Therefore his life was not sacrificed.

What then? If only his soul "resurrected", is it not the Christian claim that all souls rise after death? What then was unique about Jesus? It appears that he did nothing more than die, and his soul went to heaven, as Christians claim theirs do. Granted, his body was sacrificed, but with the disdain with which Christianity regards the human body, what's the big loss?

To Whom was Jesus Sacrificed?

If Jesus was sacrificed, to whom was he sacrificed? This seems to be a point many Christians overlook. So much so, in fact, that they don't even understand the question when you first ask it of them. Not for whom, or by whom, but to whom? A sacrifice is offered to an angry God to appease him so that he will grant humans what they are seeking. The Christian religion suggests that Yahweh required that his own "son" be killed in order to appease him. Would someone killing your only son appease you?

Was a Sacrifice Required?

Apparently not. For a full discussion on God's requirements for forgiveness, please see the Salvation page.

Was a Sacrifice Allowed?

Deuteronomy 24:16 "The fathers shall not be put to death for the children, nor the children be put to death for the fathers; every man shall be put to death for his own sin"

2 Kings 14:6 Yet he did not put the sons of the assassins to death, in accordance with what is written in the Book of the Law of Moses where the Lord commanded: "Fathers shall not be put to death for their children, nor children put to death for their fathers; each is to die for his own sins."

Ezekiel 18:20 The soul who sins is the one who will die. The son will not share the guilt of the father, nor will the father share the guilt of the son. The righteousness of the righteous man will be credited to him, and the wickedness of the wicked will be charged against him.
