Jesus : The Messiah or the Son of God?

Many Christians do not realize that Jesus could not have been both the Jewish Messiah and the Son of God. He had to be one or the other according to their own texts.

The Old Testament makes many prophesies regarding the coming messiah. Whether or not Jesus fulfilled these prophesies is discussed elsewhere. For now we will deal solely with the prophesy that the messiah would be from the lineage of David. Herein lies the dilemma. The line of David was a royal bloodline that was passed through the male. To be of the Davidic line Jesus would have had to descended from a male of this line. God, obviously, is not a descendant of David. So either Jesus is of the Davidic line or he is the son of God. He cannot be both.

Some argue that Mary was a descendant of David and mistakenly cite the geneaologies listed in the Gospels. First of all, the lineage would have come through the father, not the mother. The Jewish culture is very patristic. Second of all, neither of the geneaologies listed in Matthew and Luke are for Mary. They are both for Joseph. Thirdly, the geneaologies listed in Matthew and Luke, though clearly stating that they are for Joseph, contradict each other. Fourthly, the geneaologies list Jeconiah in the lineage of Joseph. Jeconiah was cursed in the Old Testament. His line would not produce an heir to the throne of David.
